Ah, that Christmas time of year… It makes us think of cosy fires, puns, hot chocolates, snow and presents – and, of course, the good old Christmas jumper. Who doesn’t love Christmas jumper day at the office? Or walking down the high street and catching the eye of someone else in a reindeer top? A Christmas can really add to the festive feeling – and you don’t have to look like you’ve just stepped out of your Grandma’s knitting catalogue! But what to wear with a Christmas jumper, I hear you cry?

What’s great about a Christmas jumper
Christmas jumpers are a lot of fun, there’s no doubt about that. They give both the wearer and the observer a smile and a feeling of festivity whenever they’re worn, and although they can really only be worn at one time of the year, there is a great deal of scope for you to wear your festive jersey – and, of course, what to wear it with.
There is a huge variety in types of Christmas jumper that you can find. The standard, baggy, reindeer splattered unflattering jumper has made way for a new generation of great, well made, fitted Christmas jumpers. You can get long ones, short ones, roll necks – the range is huge, so you are bound to find something you like.
What to wear with a Christmas jumper
A. Trousers
Anything goes, pretty much. The main thing to remember is that, because most Christmas jumpers are quite brightly coloured and patterned, you should keep your trousers plain.
Unless of course, you are dressing up as Santa and doing the rounds in the office!
Because you will be wearing it in the winter, chances are you will be pairing it with jeans or leggings so this shouldn’t be a problem.
Any style of trouser is acceptable, but Christmas jumpers tend to be on the baggy side so bear this in mind when creating your wardrobe, and go for a more fitted pair of trousers.
If you have chosen a particularly long, jumper dress style Christmas jumper, you can get away with tights under it – bear the weather in mind though, and make sure these are thick and warm!
B. Skirt
You can happily pair your Christmas jumper with a skirt and still look great.
Jumpers look great when paired with a short skirt (not too short if you’re in the office though – keep it professional, even though it’s Christmas!)
Go for a knee length or slightly higher skirt, or you can wear your Christmas jumper with a pencil skirt.
This has the added bonus of flattering your figure as well as giving a nod to the festive season.
You can add some warm tights under your skirt if the weather is cool – and you can even make these tights Christmas themed if you are wearing a plain skirt.
Christmas jumpers also look good with long, flowy skirts – just remember to tuck in the front if you go for this look, to break up the flowing lines and give you some shape.
C. Shoes
Ankle boots are a great addition to your Christmas jumper. They are high enough to elongate your legs and give you a flattering silhouette, yet casual enough to not overdo the jumper.
If you’re wearing a skirt, you can jazz the look up even further by adding a pair of court shoes, to bring a touch of glamour to the outfit.
If you’re feeling the more casual vibe, go with some chunky boots – think Doc Martens or some other big boot.
Obviously, what you wear on your feet depends on what you wear on your legs, so just decide what sort of look you are going for then match your shoes to your trousers or skirt!
D. Accessories
If you’re the sort of person who really loves Christmas and everything about it, you could go all out – match your jewellery and go for a reindeer theme, or snowmen – you could even get a pair of earrings that light up!
If you want to tone down the Christmas theme, you can go for simple silver jewellery such as a star theme, or snowflakes, or something else that conjures up Christmas.

Christmas jumpers don’t have to be garish, unflattering and items that you cringe whilst putting on. They can be flattering, cosy and fun – and what is better than having an excuse to snuggle up in a warm knitted jumper when the weather gets cold?
You don’t have to limit your Christmas jumper wearing to just “Christmas jumper day in the office” – you can happily wear it through all the cold months, and once you know what to wear with a Christmas jumper you will be laughing all the way to the Christmas tree!
